LSD is a semi-synthetic hallucinogen. This means that though the source for LSD is a naturally occurring substance, it still needs to be extracted so that the exact lysergic acid diethylamine may be produced.
The general effects of LSD as a hallucinogenic was first discovered in what is now known as Bicycle Day. Bicycle Day happened on April 19, 1943 when Dr. Albert Hoffman intentionally took 250 micrograms of LSD. Dr. Hoffman reported experiencing sensory hallucinations, paranoia, and slight visual impairment. In spite of his altered state he was still able to think clearly and request for milk, which he knew would be a generic antidote to poisoning. Dr. Hoffman also noted that anything he heard would be translated into visual stimuli. The doctor eventually fell asleep and reported a general feeling of happiness upon waking.
Project MKULTRA was a psychological study started and run by the Central Intelligence Agency which tested the possibility of using LSD for interrogation and control. This research lasted from the 1950s to the late 1960s.
