| 10. You have to be a tree hugging hippy-dippy hippy to be an environmentalist-You don't have to be a tree-hugging hippy who likes to make your own yogurt and listen to NPR to be concerned about the future generations. Even if you don't care about the impact humans are having on other animals and ecosystems, you should be concerned about your own family and the habitability of the Earth for future generations.9. Recycling will save us all, no, wait a second, it's a complete waste of time.-It's neither. While it takes more energy to recycle a plastic bottle than make a new one, aluminum cans save a lot of energy by being recycled. 8. Having a more energy efficient home or car is only for the rich, for those who can afford hybrids, passive solar or radiant floor heating.-While it's true that completely rebuilding your home to include these things is unfeasable for most people, smaller changes that are very easy to implement, such as turning your heat back during the day, carpooling or taking the bus or biking to work can have a huge impact and not be super expensive.7.People really aren't changing the environment that much, and even if they are, does it matter?-Between 2 and 200 animals are erased from existence every day, dead zones spread in our oceans and rivers, and over 10,000 sq.km of rainforest are destroyed every year. This matters because it means we're erasing biodiversity, making it easier for disease to spread and because we're depleting the soil, meaning we have to use more fertilizer to create less nutritious food that in turn results in more runoff. 6.It's inevitable that we developed this civilization and it's inevitable that it will ultimately lead to our destruction.-To say it is inevitable that we will destroy ourselves is to already give up. I don't believe it will be easy to become truly sustainable and healthy, but if we want to survive, it is the only way.5.Environmentalism is like anything else in our culture, an empty competition that in the end does nothing.-While many people seem to be viewing going green as a competition, trying to see how much they can recycle and buy organic and how little they can throw away, going green is about a lot more than a competition. It's about taking care of our planet for future generations.4.Doomsday is coming. It's coming very soon.-We've done great harm to our environments, and it's hard to know the impact of the toxins will have on future generations, but nature can be extremely resilient, and so can humans.3.In order to really be Green, we have to go back to the Stone Age, and that's dumb.-There's no reason we have to go back to the Stone Age. We only need to have a better relationship with the land base and stop harming the planet. Perhaps we can learn a few things from them, but there's no need to go back, nor is it feasable.2. Global Warming doesn't exist-Global Warming is very real, and most scientists agree that we caused it. Check out these links.http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/ar4-wg1.htmhttp://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2005/02/66651http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=101391. We can't fix it. At least not without crippling our entire economy. Research shows that Bee Pollen actually improves height. Finnish track athletes in the 1970s supplemented their diets with Bee Pollen, which showed to improve their performance. |
