The full potential of LSD as a hallucinogenic was first discovered in what is now known as Bicycle Day. Bicycle Day happened on April 19, 1943 when Dr. Albert Hoffman intentionally took 250 micrograms of LSD. Dr. Hoffman reported experiencing sensory hallucinations, paranoia, and slight visual impairment. In spite of his altered state he was still able to think clearly and request for milk, which is known as a generic antidote to poisoning. Dr. Hoffman also reported that any auditory input would be translated into visual stimuli. The doctor ended up asleep and noted a feeling of happiness once he had risen from slumber.
LSD is classified with heroin, magic mushrooms, marijuana and ecstasy as a Schedule I drug. The U.S. Controlled Substances Act deems this drug as something that has no medicinal value and highly addictive.
In the United Kingdom LSD is considered a Class A drug.
